Legal Professionals are now reduced to Professional Traders

There were only a few careers that were viewed as more prestigious and dignified than any other careers known to man.  One of them was the job of being a lawyer but that was then and this is now.  It appears that now this industry is slowly but surely being demoted from a status of pride to just a job.  A child used to dream of the day when they would become a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman or fireman.  Some still look forward to obtain a degree in medicine, pinning that badge upon their chests or grabbing that ax and charging into a burning building but few mention the one top job on that list.

What appears to have happened to this once ethical and righteous job is that care to maintain its status has been ignored for years and those who were placed with the task of keeping it precious are either long gone or have been corrupted into believing its purpose is something different.  Back in the days of Matlock and Perry Mason, we saw a person with the love of fairness and someone who was willing to go to any length to make sure that justice was meted out equally even at the cost of losing the case.

Today our members of this once elite group have demoted themselves to nothing more than professional traders.  They trade on plea bargains now.  No need to venture into any case to see if there is real innocence there or not.  Their desire to seek equal justice is now totally bounded by whose paying their salaries.  If you have the resources, you will get the best defense known to man but if you are like the millions of Americans struggling to make ends meet and running into a legal issue here and there, you defense is totally based on the deal that your public defender can get for you.  To hear the attorney assigned to defend you say that the prosecutor has a really good case before even looking at the evidence makes that crystal clear.

Attorneys worldwide now defend this plea bargain system as a way to ease court dockets and provide all with a speedy and public trial but the true purpose of having a trial is not speed but to bring forth the truth.  The truth that can be often buried behind circumstantial evidence or evidence that has not been properly investigated.  The simple truth is the major difference behind the innocent being convicted and the guilty becoming even braver.  This plea bargain system has now greatly infected our juvenile justice system and to anyone willing to open their eyes to see, considers this.  If this system is able to convince grown men and women to plead guilty in order to go home or get a lighter sentence, what chance does a teenager whose been granted by the court as a ward of the state meaning that these defenders of justice does not have to consult with the parents or guardians of these juveniles and any decision that they make cannot be reversed.

That’s right America, you may have given birth and nourished that child through the bad dreams, sickness and all the pain of growing up but now that child’s future is left up to a complete stranger who knows only what is written on paper about this child.  If we cannot force these lawyers, old and new, to step up and restore the luster that this industry once had, then we as parents and guardians need to secure a way to make sure that the future of all our kids are not corrupted by those whose idea of justice is the number of cases that they win or keeping the court docket clear.
