Twist of Faith-Episode Three- Dates and Calendars

Today we want to talk about the Calendar and dates that we hold so dear.  The issue is whether we should continue to follow common wisdom or begin to think for ourselves.

Jehovah Witness say Jesus was born in October and some point to the Greek calendar to say it was other months.  Regardless of what date you decide to observe and celebrate the birth of Christ, the main point is that you celebrate it.  What we have come to call the birth of Christ on the 25th of December has stopped meaning celebrating the best gift this world could have ever gotten, to seeing just how many lights we can strum upon our house, how many presents we can put under the tree, who can out spend whom on this date.  The news is not about the birth of Christ and instead we are bombarded with Christmas Specials as if Hollywood has the answers to our salvation.  Kids get to see all the old Christmas Cartoon Specials and for weeks get to hear all different artists doing their rendition of those old loved Christmas carols.  We do all this thinking that these actions will protect us from celebrating the birth of Christ all year round.  Because we really have no way of knowing when Jesus was born, why don’t we try to error on the side of caution by celebrating it all year round.

What does that mean to you?  Simple, treating people with kindness, and mercy all year around instead of just during that week of December and this exercise won’t cost you a dime.  No need to find the biggest tree or spend all that time gift wrapping anything, just a few “Hi, how are you” will do.  Now some of us may claim that we semi-celebrate Jesus’ birth by going to church every Sunday for the Bible tells us to know the Sabbath and keep it holy.

Under past circumstances I would have agreed with you but recently it has come to light that during the time all this was taken place, there were no official calendar to tells us when all this really happen.  There are experts and those with large degrees who say when this happen but to take the word of a mortal also means to possibility condemn yourself to a false prophet.  We know that God created the world and on the seventh day he rested but we do not know what day that was.  What if we applied our current calendar of days to this and found that God actually began to create the world on a Wednesday. That would mean that we all should be headed to our church of choice on Tuesdays instead of Sundays.

Common wisdom says that we celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25th of each year and along with that we much go out and buy as many Christmas gifts as possible for our children and friends or family.  We must never discourage our children from believing in Santa Claus but not speak so much about teaching to believe in Jesus.  We can sing the praises of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in assembly but it’s illegal to hold any kind of education about Christ in that same arena.  We do this because we are Christians and God-fearing people because the last thing we want to do is violate any law passed down by man even if we must sacrifice the laws passed on by God.  I suggest that we stop fearing the punishment of man and began to fear the punishment of God, in other words, cry out “God is good” or “God bless you” whenever you feel like it and if the person standing behind you, in line, gets offended, turn to them,  smile and turn the other cheek.
