Hypocrisy is alive and well in Sports Nation

I often times am surprised by those who say that they speak their minds and are not influenced by personal feelings when it comes to commenting on sporting events.  Many analysts say that they are impartial but then come an event which shows their real colors.  I expect it from everyday fans or those of us who are not paid to sit and critique teams but it is still surprising and somewhat discouraging to hear it coming from them.

Almost to a Tee, many of those spoke about above had nothing but mean things to say about the elbow from Ron Artest/World Peace to James Harden during the Lakers Thunder Game  and according to an art5icle written by Kevin Kolczynski of Reuters much of what was quoted could have been contributed to many of these knowledgeable and partial commentators and analysts.  The report quoted NBA Commissioner David Stern as saying “The concussion suffered by James Harden demonstrates the danger posed by violent acts of this kind, particularly when they are directed at the head area," said. "We remain committed to taking necessary measures to protect the safety of NBA players, including the imposition of appropriate penalties for players with a history of on-court altercations."  The article stated that World Peace was ejected just before halftime in the Lakers' 114-106 double-overtime victory over the Thunder. He was pounding his chest with his right hand to celebrate a dunk, and then he threw his left elbow into Harden, who came into his way.”    Even though World Peace apologized for the incident and admitted that it was “unintentional” he still got a seven game suspension which means he will have to sit out the first six games of next season.  Even though I am not a fan of Meta World Peace I do see where his sentence is more about his history and the fact that many believe that no one ever changes than being firm yet fair in handing down decisions.  Commissioner Stern plainly spoke when he mentioned his decisions based on “players with a history of on-court altercations”.  This article did more to clue me in on why so many may think that this was just another Ron Artest/Meta World Peace moment when it suggested that “Harden came in his way.”  The question is intent and while we can never be sure that World Peace had intent, we can be sure that Harden did.  Take a very close look at the replay, out of the entire clear and empty court, Harden choose World Peace’s personal space to occupy.  Harden had plenty of time and space to change direction but he did not.  While World Peace needs to take responsibility for the elbow, Sports Nation needs to take responsibility for elevating Harden on a throne while throwing World Peace to the lions.

The most blatant example of this hypocrisy is when Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo bumped the ref in the Celtics-Hawks game and was ejected; every voice I heard from Sports Nation was crying foul and defending Rondo.  They all took to his defense as ducks on a June bug without even one of them admitting that he too much take responsibility for his actions.  While he should be commended for taking responsibility for the first tee, he does not deserve any sympathy for getting the second.  He knew better and if nothing else should have begged ref’s pardon as soon as it happened but why should he when so many are providing him cover.  Cover Rondo because he’s a good guy but let World Peace hang out there because he is a bad guy, then elevate James Harden because he is a victim.  Seriously?
