Shirts calling for the Capture of George Zimmerman are Disrespectful

Reuters reports that shirts were on sale in Miami Florida during a protest calling for the capture of George Zimmerman.  In my humble opinion this action does nothing but disrespects the memory of Trayvon , undermines the work being done by his family and attorneys’, attempts to circumvent the FBI and all legal representatives who are truly working to make justice fair for all.  It is nothing more than an opportunity to stand on the grave of Trayvon to make money.

Hypocrisy is the act of pointing out what others are doing as unjust or immoral while doing the very same thing yourself.  Selling those shirts and pushing this vigilante style law enforcement by offering a reward is asking some mentally questionable person to conduct him or herself identical to the way Mr. Zimmerman did.  His action caused a 17 year old to lose his life and supporting this idea of a bounty in any way could also result in the same end.

So what would be the purpose?  Is it to see justice for Trayvon?  This is doubtful because you have not given his parents, family, protestors and local authorities the opportunity to correct this wrong.  I would probably be more sympathy to the cause if charges had been brought and Mr. Zimmerman had skipped town but until that actually happens, this idea of bounties are as useful as having a second nose.  It’s appalling to me to consider that some of us in the African-American community are not as outraged and upset about this as I.  We need justice for Trayvon and we will not see it as long as our actions cloud who the real victim is.

The African-American community and all other pigeon-holed and ignored communities need to finally demand and receive the same kind of justice that we are afforded in the US Constitution.  This cannot nor will ever be found behind the butt of a gun.  It has to be found in front of a microphone or in our State and Federal Legislative bodies.  It has to be found originating from a soap box, pulpit or any place where you can speak to a crowd.

I understand and support the intense desire to see justice done in this case but this does not mean that I will not oppose bounties or releasing Zimmerman’s personal information with any less denouncement or intensity.  I understand and support the right to bear arms but that does not mean I will not oppose the National Rifleman Association’s (NRA) intent to return this nation to the Wild West with their pushing of this Stand Your Ground Law with any less denouncement or intensity.  I understand and support the right for businesses to try and make doing business in this country less burdensome and more favorable but that does not mean that I will not oppose  American Legislative Exchange Council’s (ALEC) attempt to undermine our very democracy by crafting “model” bills to meet with their own personal agenda with any less denouncement or intensity.

Anything worth having takes time, Dr. Martin Luther King taught us that and if many of you cannot find it within your soul to decry that which you know is foul on your own.  Do it in memory of Dr. King, Robert Kennedy and other victims like Trayvon Martin.
