Tea Party stalwarts and their elected representatives differ on the meaning of a smaller government

All of us have heard the members of the Tea Party from all the different parts speak so highly about a smaller government and how they want to reduce the involvement of government in our lives.  We’ve heard them say this but we have witnessed and are witnessing their elected representatives do the exact opposite.
Prime example is the article written by Joe Wolverton, II of The New American titled Tennessee Divests Teachers Union of Collective Bargaining Power  in which he reported that “on June 1, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam signed a bill eliminating the collective bargaining “rights” of teachers in the Volunteer State.”  It quotes the Speaker of the Senate, Ron Ramsey (R-Blountville) saying “It matters who governs. For years upon years, one union has thwarted the progress of education in Tennessee. Reform after reform has been refused or dismantled.  The barrier that has prevented us from putting the best possible teacher in every classroom will soon be removed.”  This places government between your school board, its teachers, students and parents.  In other words, it is not left up to the people to decide what is best for your schools but government.  A teacher’s union has only the power relinquished by the parents and the adults in the community but now government has stepped in to show you how it should be done.  Good intentions do not make good policy especially if that policy goes against the beliefs that you claim to have.

Like so many others states and even in Washington where those who speak about a smaller government and campaigned on this along with creating jobs, have accomplished nothing more than to open the door to more government intrusion into people’s lives.  How can a smaller government monitor every single pregnancy in America?
