Mosley wasn’t looking for a fight just for a payday

If there has ever been any wonder why the sport of boxing has given way to Mix Martial Arts (MMA) and Sumo Wrestling, wonder no more.  Nothing was more evident of that than this highly hyped battle between Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley.  I guess with guaranteed purses, fighters do not have to earn their payday just show up for it.

All of the evidence you need can be found in this portion of an article written by Tim Dahlberg of the Associated Press titled Pacquiao wins lopsided decision over Mosley.  “Manny Pacquiao caught Shane Mosley early, then chased him the rest of the night. Not much more he could do against an aging fighter who seemed only to want to survive.  Pacquiao won a lopsided 12-round decision Saturday night, retaining his version of the welterweight title in a fight that was roundly booed over the late rounds because Mosley refused to trade punches.  "I fought the best fighter in the world," Mosley said. "He has exceptional power, power that I've never been hit like this before."  Pacquiao knocked down Mosley with a left hook in the third round, a punch that sapped Mosley's willingness to engage. Pacquiao ran after Mosley the rest of the fight, but the former champion who has never been stopped in 18 years in the ring managed to stay away enough to finish the 12th round upright.”

Some experts say that the lack of viewership is due to not having any standouts but even standouts will not bring back the fans if this is what they will be subjected to.  The cost of just getting a ticket is way too much to pay to see two warriors enter the ring but only one warrior fights for all that he/she is worth.  They come to see two men or women put it all on the line and regardless of whose hand gets raised in the end, the time and effort to make it there in person would be well worth it.  This fight, however, was nothing like that and unless boxing changes soon. Fighters may soon find themselves fighting in a ring surrounded by a green or blue screen with the audience superimposed in the background.
