Welcome to America’s only one-woman town

Ever thought about how you would feel if you thought  that you were the only person left on earth, well Elsie Eiler might have a small idea how that feels.

According to Reuters Rick Wilking “At its peak in the 1930's the town had 150 residents but after the railroad left it began to decline. Now down to a population of just one, Elsie Eiler, Monowi is the only incorporated town, village or city in the United States with just a single resident.”  Now I have heard the term “a one horse town” but never a one woman or man, for that matter, town.  It does explain one thing though and that is populations tend to follow industry so when the railroad left so did the majority of the population.  The article does not say when the railroad shut down so we do not know exactly how long this town has been in decline but looking at the pictures from this article tells a lot.

The article also does not say how close Ms. Eiler’s nearest neighbor is but I guess it’s safe to assume that the next town over does still has people and places for her to go socially.  It did mention that she owned a tavern in the town but she probably drinks alone and the town does have a 5,000 book library.  One can only wonder how many times she has read all of them.
