Agencies requiring personal information should be held responsible for identity theft

Contrary to popular belief, it may surprise many to learn that identity theft is not limited to failure to shred your documents or filling out an on-line application.  Many of the identities may just originated from agencies which require personal information from those seeking services like banks, finance companies, mortgage originators, daycare centers or any other place that say they need this information to qualify the applicant.  It may occur when these entities lose your information when you fax it in and the intended recipient does not get it or they fail to shred old applications or information profiles.

To think that this may not part of the problem would be like failing to assume that your information is safe with those you do business with.  There are millions of Americans who pride themselves on taking care of their personal information yet when their identity is stolen and major problems result, they are the only ones left to pay for it.  This is far from fair and it should be the responsibility of any agency that requires this information to protect it as if it was their own.  Human nature is we protect that and those who are close to us and for those who are not, we think very little of their future unless it affects our own.  Having regulation which requires these entities to give as much care about applicant personal and financial information as they give to their own my just make it that much harder to identity theft to occur.

Some say that this problem is far more complicated than one man can solve but if we listen to John F. Kennedy as quoted by Chris Matthews who said that “all problems man-made can be solved by man” means that a failure to try and solve a problem is just as bad as the problem itself.  Failing to solve a problem is not near as bad as failing to try.
