Joe Lieberman’s take on American intervention in Syria quite disturbing

For the past few weeks since the protests have been going on in Syria, I had withheld my opinion until I heard Senator Joe Lieberman speak on State of the Union with Candy Crowley.  What was most disturbing about the rhetoric spewed by Mr. Lieberman was asking President Obama for the same type of action that led us into the Iraq War.  The same “go-it-alone” thinking that has so far cost more in lives than it was ever worth.

Based on this article written by Bassem Mrque of the Associated Press titled Syria Targets Activists in Pinpoint Raids in which he reports that “earlier this month, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called Assad to say he was "greatly disturbed" by the reports of violence. Many Western leaders, including President Barack Obama, have condemned Syria's harsh tactics to quell dissident.  Britain's Foreign Office advised against all travel to Syria because of the violence. It added that "in light of the deteriorating security situation, British nationals in Syria who have no pressing need to remain should leave by commercial means" and for me this is good enough.  I don’t see us doing more because it was also reported in this same article that these “accounts could not be independently confirmed because Syria has expelled journalists and restricted access to trouble spots.”

I do find myself agreeing with Mr. Lieberman, especially if much of his reasoning is true but until what he spoke about on the program can be verified better than his statements on Iraq, I believe that it is in the best interest of this country to keep trying to get U.N. approval and have this meet the other requirements used in joining the Libyan Conflict.  When it comes to following the advice of anyone who pushed the Iraq intervention but failed to verify the information they used or to find a way to pay for it, I choose to error on the side of caution.  This president promised to weigh sending service men and women in harms way very carefully and I for one pray that he never goes back on that promise despite what others say.
