Possible cease-fire agreement in Libya could be a ruse?

CNN Wire Staff reports in their article titled S. African president: Gadhafi accepts terms of agreement that “embattled Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, in negotiations with the African Union, has agreed in principal to a deal that would end the conflict in the nation he's ruled for 42 years, South African President Jacob Zuma told reporters Sunday.  Details of the agreement were not available, though it is believed to include an immediate ceasefire in the nearly two-month long war between Gadhafi's forces and those fighting to unseat him. In his comments, Zuma also discussed an end to NATO airstrikes aimed at enforcing a no-fly zone and targeting Gadhafi's troops.  Earlier Sunday, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz told journalists that the meetings "will discuss the ways to resolve the crisis in Libya, and our main goal is to stop the military operations and find adequate solutions for the problem between our Libyan brothers," according to a Mauritanian news agency.  The United Nations said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will travel to Cairo Thursday to head meetings on Libya at the Arab League headquarters. Among the participants will be Catherine Ashton, the representative for foreign affairs and security for the European Union.”

As I am sure that some of you probably have already heard, there are those thinking that this could be a ruse to lower the guard of NATO and allow Gadhafi to continue his reign upon Libya.  In parts of my mind this too has been a thought of mine until I began to try and piece together the reasons why this story would be true.  The first that comes to mind is the lack of military experience of his sons and Gadhafi’s age.  The second is the high ranking defections of those in his inner circle and even the reports of his sons trying to work up a deal probably without his approval.  The third and most convincing argument was Gadhafi’s most trusted advisor defecting and later it being reported that his assets had been unfrozen.  Why was this single action most convincing?

His most trusted probably possess the information that may tie Moammar Gadhafi directly to the bombing of the aircraft which killed Americans and getting this deal could provide him some escape from prosecution.  Dying in the country or being exiled with no money was options that Gadhafi feared more than the rebels and this could also allow him to slick off into the darkness with some dignity.  All this is why it was so convincing and did I mention yet that all this was done with American combat boots on the ground.
