Republican Governors attempt to bust up the union is a bust

In any fight winning a battle does not by any means mean that you will win the war.  For Republicans Governors and State Republicans who are standing with the busting on public workers unions, may you soon learn that class warfare is not won in any board room but in the streets and by those who have more to lose than just an elected seat.

Associated Press writer Ann Sanner’s article titled Union bill whizzing through Ohio Legislature has so much good stuff in it I was nervous about using it to make my point because I was afraid of not attributing it to her as I should but regardless here are just a few.  Point one is “While much of the nation's attention remains focused on a stalled proposal in Wisconsin to restrict collective bargaining rights for public workers, an Ohio measure that in some ways is tougher and broader is speeding toward reality.”   "For as far-reaching this thing is and how many lives it will affect, I can't believe how fast it moved," said Columbus Police Sgt. Shaun Laird, who wanted lawmakers to spend more time debating the changes.”  “In contrast, the Ohio bill could go as early as next week to House committee hearings. Republicans hold a 59-40 majority in the House, where the measure is likely to receive strong support.”  This part of her article simply shows how those who believe in this action see it as an important step to a balanced budget when we all know it’s much more.

What seems to be completely overlooked is encompassed in the next quoted portion of her article.  "We hope that the members of the House will understand the valuable role working families play in their districts," Anthony Caldwell, spokesman for the Service Employees International Union, District 1199 said. "The House is a two-year body. Whatever happens, people are going to remember that. This isn't just about union issues, this is about working people."   This in a nutshell is why the rush to bust the unions will be a bust.  Whatever is accomplished during this cycle of Republican rule will be undone when the control of both State Houses and Senate and well as Governorships are returned to Democrats.  It will not be long before the numbers which surprised so many during Barack Obama’s election to president will again play a major part in the 2012 election.  Those who support this assault on unions may have won the battle but the war has yet to begin.
