Time for Straight Talk on the Illegal Immigration Debate

It’s not too often that an article can get me so pissed that I respond with vim and vigor but this one did.  I used to carry the GOP in high regards and felt that they deserved a chance to be heard.  I am beginning to rethink that now not only because of the actions they are taking in Wisconsin and other US states but because of statements from Republican lawmakers who should know better.  Statements like this one found in an Associated Press article titled GOP: Illegal immigrants taking minorities' jobs written by Suzanne Gamboa, “Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Calif., the subcommittee's chairman, argued that the "real victims of the failed immigration policies" are low-skilled legal workers.  “Immigrants often compete for jobs with low-income laborers, he said.

Another brilliant lawmaker, “Rep. Lamar Smith, a Texas Republican, pointed out that after Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided Georgia Crider Inc., which had 600 jobs filled by people not working in the country legally, the company raised wages $1 an hour and attracted legal workers, primarily black Americans.”  It was also reported that these highly intelligent people were able to find witnesses to support this crap.  “The three witnesses supporting the Republican view at the hearing were Hispanic and black. Lawmakers and witnesses presented their own studies and statistics supporting their positions.”  It’s time to set the record straight.

Illegal immigrants do not take jobs away from anyone; they are called upon to provide businesses with slave labor because no legal American will work for such low pay and endure the disrespect that comes along with working nearly for free.  Hence the reason unions are so very vital to the livelihood of a nation.  Whether the person is a legal citizen of Hispanic decent or African-American holds no bearing to working literally for free.  American citizens will demand a living wage because as American citizens, they deserve no less.  Businesses that seek to lower their costs and increase their bottom line will choose to seek out illegal have and send jobs overseas to bolster this desire.  Illegal’s are only doing the jobs that American citizens do not want or refuse to take.

When lawmakers who should know better begin to use this as a selling tool to deport or pretend that they are truly concerned about the unemployment problem, they are being disingenuous and should be called out on it.  I can not agree more with “Wade Henderson, chairman and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights” when he said that “Denial of equal opportunity in education, criminal justice, housing and jobs "continues to contribute more directly to the high unemployment rate that African-Americans endure and not the issue of illegal immigration as has been cited by virtue of this hearing."   It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand this but apparently there are those who will use any means necessary to achieve their goals even if it pits one group of American citizen against another.  I do not know when we, as Americans, are going to stop allowing ourselves to be used as pawns in another’s game but I pray that it be soon.
