What may be behind the retiring of Democratic Congress Members?

It was reported today that Senator Daniel Akaka of Hawaii has elected not to seek re-election to the Senate and with him are Jeff Bingham of New Mexico, Jim Webb of Virginia, Kent Conrad of North Dakota and Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.  That makes a total of six who have decided to retire and let’s not forget about Jane Harmon who decided to take another job.

Some say that the method is to get them to declare early so that the Democratic National Congressional Committee will have plenty of time to find strong replacements to run for their seat.  Frankly I believe it is much more.  I believe that democrats are taking advantage of the season and the fact that for no other reason Barack Obama will be on the ballot.

This is the season where republicans promised jobs if they were elected and given control of the House while only proposing bill after bill designed to do nothing but keep the unemployment numbers high and drive a wedge between individual groups.  This is he season where Republicans have declared war on the middle class by taking away the only vehicle many of the middle class and poor have in this country to pick themselves up by.  So many of their predictions have turned out to be false and nothing that they have promised so far has been delivered upon.  They spoke one language on the campaign trail but reverted right back to the same old game once they were sworn in.  They promised real change but all that is being seen is no change.

Democrats have seen the light and now remember what caused the creation of this party in the first place.  They are beginning to realize that those who helped you pick out your office curtains are not really the ones you should be concentrating on when you are representing the people.  It’s the little old lady behind the service counter that you should be listening to and the little old man still having to greet you at Wal-Mart because he can not afford to retire.  It’s the union and non-union households who know that with this organization, making a better life for their children and grandchildren will be a mute point.  Democrats are also acutely aware that the name hat brought out so many will bring out even more this time.   For those Republicans that are not re-called by their voters by the time the 2012 elections are upon us, they will either be safe form not running or soon looking for other sources of employment.

For those who seemed to have sold their soul to the Tea Party, it must be remembered that they are only about 25% of the voting public and they only made giant waves because many of the Democratic voters decided to take the midterm elections off.  There is still that 75% out there that are becoming more and more disturbed that those who promised to fight for them has gone back to Washington and won major battles for Wall Street while failing to suit up to defend Main Street.  Democrats are clearing the way for a new group of Democrats on the horizon.  A new group that knows which side their bread is buttered on and knows the art of compromise.  They know how to get things done for the country as a whole and will not be swayed by those with deep pockets.  Democrats are clearing the way for a new wave of Maverick Democrats and the people’s agenda.
