Are some Black Leaders using Police Brutality against Blacks as their Stepping Stone?

I read an article by Juan Lozano of the Associated Press titled “Houston black leaders laud release of police video” where a “Houston community activist Quanell X released the tape to Houston television station KTRK, which aired it Wednesday evening.”  In a statement released by Quanell X stated "This never, ever should have been kept from the people.”  "What's on that tape, the world will get a chance to see now how they truly behave in public with young black men."  While others leaders in Houston's black community applauded the release of what they called the "appalling" and "outrageous" actions of "rogue officers."  They do have a very valid point and I can understand exactly what they are saying but I have to question as to whether this was done for the betterment of the community or to give them exposure and elevation.

I say this because I also can understand why the opposition to the release of this videotape point as well.  According to this same article “Prosecutors and Houston Mayor Annise Parker on Thursday criticized a community activist's release of a surveillance video saying it could jeopardize the cases against the officers.”  “Orders to bar the release the videotape was from a federal judge of a federal lawsuit filed by the teenager Chad Holley and the judge of the criminal case.”  Their point is if releasing of the tape is too early will it damage the chance for this teenager to get justice or affect the appropriate justice for the black community.

Let no one get confused, the law that Holley broke deserves the full extend of the law and he should not be excused for any responsibility for his criminal choices.  We should not feel empathy toward him and reduce his sentence for his crime because of his victimization but he should be seen as a real victim in regards to the brutality.

I can not be sure if black leaders checked with the victim Chad Holley to find out what he thought about the release of the videotape damages his chances for justice and get his permission before releasing it.  I can not be sure if the release will damage the prosecutor’s chance at justice against the officers for the black community.  What I do know is that all of this should have been considered before any actions are taken by uninvolved parties.  If none of this was done then all who stand up in front of a camera to get their fifteen minutes of fame should be ashamed of themselves.  Their actions were not in the best interest of the black community nor and more importantly for the betterment of the victim.
