The Debate over Gun Control

Not being an avid gun holder/collector myself, I really had not thought too much about this issue.  The unnecessary shooting in Tucson, Arizona brought this issue to light but to me still wasn’t enough for me to really join the fray until I saw the segment on the Rachel Maddow Show about how many times one individual was able to go to the same place and buy up to twenty assault rifles each time without it raising questions for anyone.

I served this country in the United States Marines from Sept 1980 till April 1991 and in that time, learned one important fact about guns.  They are useful and legal but when they are turned into nothing more than a conversation piece or something that is used to force your values on another then they become like any other commodity and needs to be heavily regulated.  When I saw heavily regulated I do not mean that laws need to be legislated to prevent responsible and rational Americans from owing, what I mean is that they show not be so easily available that any bonehead can get one.  Owning a gun does not make anyone brave, strong or a man but being responsible does.

Reduction of Mexican Cartel deaths may have been reduced if someone had not placed profit over people and refused to sell those assault rifles to one individual or informed law enforcement after receiving the request.  The National Rifle Association (NRA) is needed to insure that all reasonable and rational people are allowed to own guns but when they hijack the 2nd Amendment and decide to be the one and only voice as to what kind of weapons can be in allowed in public, they have gone too far.  I need to be able to receive their assistance if I am a rational and responsible person, wish to own a gun but am denied because of some radical shift in equal rights but I do not need them to be the primary reason my neighborhood is too unsafe to allow my children to play in our own yard.

There should never be a time where our answer to gun violence is to bring in more guns, bigger guns or better guns.  Our answer should be to learn how it happen and correct the problem swiftly before others are hurt.  This should never be the job of one person or one party; it should be the job of all Americans.  This should never be the decision of one company or one organization, it should be up to every single solitary American to choose which firearms are adequate and which ones are not.  Some people joke about this massive leak of guns onto the streets but after learning that one person could purchase as many assault rifles as they wished for not other reason than to put the lives of Mexicans, Americans and law enforcement in jeopardy means that this is not fun and games anymore.

It’s time to stand up and demand the return of our 2nd Amendment and clean up the lawlessness of this awful stain.  We need to do this as a nation of law-abiding citizens and tell the criminals for once and for all that we are no longer going to be terrorized at home.  We need to stand up and stand together before another innocent life, like the eight or nine years girl in Tucson is lost or a family goes down.
