Reaching out for Rehab only works if you’re the one reaching

No one sitting on the bench will ever be able to remedy the problem facing this society of drug and alcohol abuse.  Anyone who is paying minimal attention should be able to see that.  This society will only get a handle on this problem when those who abuse drugs and alcohol are ready to do so.

Teaching abusers to recognize what it is that drives them to abuse is one thing and that I believe can be worthy call for rehab centers but to expect those who attend to just stop is unrealistic at best.  Sandy Cohen’s Associated Press article Tensions, hopes run high in residential drug rehab  says it best “Chief executive Dr. David Sack, a psychiatrist specializing in addiction treatment at Promises Treatment Center in Malibu says "Most who show up here have not made the conscious decision that they want treatment... They want to get someone off their back," Sack says, adding that work and legal problems are the most common precipitants. "The people who show up are, at best, ambivalent."

The first thing that has to happen is that the individual must first be willing to do it and that is the only way that any thing could be done.  You can not build a house on the sand for it will wash away.  You must begin that construction on a solid footing and foundation.  That foundation must be first and foremost the will of the individual.  Whether that person is the average Joe or celebrity, the first step begins with them.  Judges and attorney’s who think that threaten rehab to any abuser should be enough to make them straighten up has not looked at the situation with open eyes.  In Ms. Cohen’s article she quotes an expert who says that the average trips to rehab is two or three times but if these trips are the result of crimes, then you have just condemned two or three people to unnecessary trauma or death.

Families want to try and save their family members and many are willing to do what ever it takes to get it done but if you pay very close attention to a show like “Intervention” before that person is carted off, they have a meeting and the individual makes that decision and want to get better.  Many facilities have even went as far as to try using other drugs to help curb abusers appetite but to replace one drug with another may not be the smartest move one could make.  There is no stronger drug than the mind and once the mind is made up, it can not be easily changed.  Change the mind and you can change the person other than that you might as well keep that dog on the porch.
