The Charlie Sheen Interview

Was watching the Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell and saw a piece of the interview which was shown on the Today Show with Charlie Sheen.  At first I was truly not interested in hearing some spoiled Hollywood multi-millionaire whine about how everyone was being mean to him but because it was Lawrence O’Donnell bringing it up, I listened.  I must now admit that the way Lawrence portrayed the story was nothing like the message that I got from watching that piece of it.  I saw much more than that.

What I saw was a man, who was more determined than I had ever seen, speaks about something that I had never thought about before.  He spoke out about Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) and how less than impressive they were at making him better.  He had decided to stop wasting his time in an organization where he did not get better by following the rules created by someone else.  He decided to tackle this problem on his own and rely only on those who to believe that before anyone can get the help that they need, they must first be willing to accept that help.

Mr. Sheen, while seeming to reject the help offered by AA, did seem to accept the help offered by those close to him.  While I disagree with the tactics which seemed to be all over the news about his actions, I do applaud his willingness to speak candidly and honestly.  He made some very points during the part one of the interview and when asked directly about controversial issues, he did not seem to miss a beat.  Because TV is all about ratings and print media are all about circulation, it would stand to reason that portraying Mr. Sheen as some sort of out of control monster would increase both of these for those entities.  If it is true that he has been working hard to stay off the drugs and performing at the top of his game during the shoots of his show, this would not be a good ratings or circulation genre for TV and print Medias.  It’s much better to report any controversy and report on it as long as the sales are high than it is to investigate fully to understand why.
