Rockford’s Rich Black History Being Buried

Rockford’s rich black history began in 1834 when a young 22 year old slave by the name of Lewis Lemon, made the journey from what is now Galena Illinois to what is now Rockford Illinois via the Rock River with his then master Germanicus Kent and a fellow explorer, later turned school teacher/farmer Thatcher Blake. It is also known that approximately 4 plus years later, Lewis Lemon was able to purchases his freedom from Germanicus Kent but that is about as far as it goes.  Very little else is really known about Rockford’s first black founder except the little that can be found about him in some of the old journals and books carefully secured in certain places and of course the fact that he was buried in what is now referred to as Greenwood Cemetery with an inscription on his gravestone that reads “Born slave–Died Free”. The Determination of History to Repeat Itself is Due to our Cowardice to Stop It

  America has always been the land of opportunity however we have become lax in our efforts to ensure that this right is made available for all of us to achieve and enjoy.   Far too often, those who see themselves in a position of authority or great wealth begin to confuse themselves with an idea that since you may be thought of as successful, means your now have the power and authority to dictate to everyone else. This lying power makes those allowed to flex it feel bigger and better than they really are.   It gives them a false sense of righteousness and security over all people, places, and things which must be corrected before we completely lose our very humanity. The Illusions of Grander Epidemic

America’s focus in upon the Ebola disease and the damages it could do to this nation but there is a more damming and destructive force which has been running rampant in our communities for years and is only getting worse.  It is the “illusions of grander” disease and it has now become an epidemic.  This disease seems to effect those with a little bit of authority and holds a prominent position within our communities.  It’s a disease that medicine will not fix and can only to erased if given the proper attention from the public.
