What was my Crime?

As a teenage girl pregnant from rape or incest
What was my crime to deserve having to care for a baby, I may never love

As an immigrant in search of a better life
What was my crime to not be allowed the same opportunities for a better life like you have?

As a senior citizen who has paid all my life into social security
What was my crime to not be able to retire with dignity?

As a veteran who sacrificed to die to protect the freedoms that you enjoy
What was my crime to not be able to get the medical care and other benefits that I earned?

As a member of the middle class who has worked long hours for little pay
What was my crime not to be able to make enough to provide for my family?

As a member of this nation’s poor who have lived in struggle for so long
What was my crime not to be able to get medical care and a raise in the minimum wage?

As a member of the real small business owners who only want to grow my business
What was my crime to deserve not receiving those tax breaks which could help me reach my goal?
