Illinois just got $89 million dollars richer now watch what happens

My wife sent me this article titled “ US grants Illinois $89 million to fight homelessness ” written by The Associated Press and posted today, Mar 09, 2016 on WREX.com.  The article reports that “ nearly $89 million in federal money has been awarded to Illinois to battle homelessness.  The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Tuesday the money will support more than 360 programs to provide housing and service programs to homeless people.  Officials say the grants under the "Continuum of Care" program are the most competitive to date. To compete, communities had to decide, for example, to shift money from existing programs to create new ones to have a longer-lasting effect.  The government estimates there were 565,000 people who were homeless on a given night in 2015. They say that's down 72,000 -- or 11 percent -- from 2010.  They add that homelessness among veterans has declined 36 percent”. For some this may sound like great news and if C...

The Fortune of Power

Much has been made about the recent rash of police shootings and their over-zealous ways of dealing with the public from the Trayvon Martin murder to the Michael Brown killing to taking the law into your own hands like Michael Dunn, but what many may not wish to see or even hear is that the road has already been paved for more violence brought on by the very ones who are granted the power to serve and protect. I take this stance after reading an article titled “U.S. Dept. of Justice reveals plans to investigate Baltimore Police Dept.” in which it reports that “ after years of alleged police brutality, the U.S. Department of Justice revealed plans Monday to investigate the Baltimore Police Department. The Baltimore Sun found that the city has paid $5.7 million in court judgments and settlements in 102 civil suits since 2011, and nearly all of the people involved in incidents leading to those lawsuits were cleared of criminal charges. Some officers were involved in multiple lawsuits...

Will Gambling really save our Veterans’ Clubs?

A recent article from the Daily Herald reports about some thinking that gambling machines will save our veterans’ clubs in this State of Illinois and a few of us don’t.  We think that its membership that will ultimately save these clubs but, as I am sure you have guessed by now, I have an extension of why membership is the key and why it is falling off. According to the Daily Herald, “Some veterans groups think video gambling might be the key to fixing finances hurt by membership declines. But some say the wait to add video gambling machines in their clubs can be long.  Bill Geary is corporate secretary of Wauconda American Legion Post 911 in the Chicago suburb. He said the addition of video gambling machines in February 2013 has meant the difference between losing money and making money.  Mike Stojak of American Legion Post 673 in Huntley tells the Daily Herald in Arlington Heights that his club spent two years applying to the state before finally getting machines i...
