The Other Side of Black-Episode Five-The War on Women
In a month where
many celebrate the achievements and advancements of African-Americans which
contributed a lot to the current status of this nation, another group which has
had the same dramatic effect has been the plight of women rights which appears
to be under assault by those who claim to want a smaller government but are now
willing to place police in the examination rooms. Take for example the recent decision made by
Susan G. Komen to stop funding breast cancer screenings through Planned
Parenthood.
In an article by Lylah
M. Alphonse titled Planned Parenthood Decision Puts Spotlight on Susan G.
Komen's Politics she reports that “The Huffington Post reports the decision
came just months after Komen hired Karen Handel to be their senior vice
president for policy in April 2011. Handel ran for governor of Georgia in 2010
on a pro-life platform and promised to eliminate state grants to Planned
Parenthood, even as she acknowledged that the state money did not fund
abortions or abortion-related services. Handel
wrote on her campaign blog "During my time as Chairman of Fulton County,
there were federal and state pass-through grants that were awarded to Planned
Parenthood for breast and cervical cancer screening, as well as a 'Healthy
Babies Initiative'," None of the services in any way involved abortions or
abortion-related services. In fact, state and federal law prohibits the use of
taxpayer funds for abortions or abortion related services and I strongly
support those laws.” Knowing this you
would have thought that this next statement from Handel would not have exited
the mouth of an intelligent person. “Since
grants like these are from the state I'll eliminate them as your next
Governor."
Now to many the
question is why now and the excuse given does not make any sense to anyone with
half a brain. The reason used is that
Planned Parenthood is under investigation but this particular event began in
September so why wait 5 months. The
above paragraph mentioned that it was because of the new hire which still does
not explain the 9 month wait. What does make
sense is the never-ending war on women and women’s rights by those who advocate
a smaller, nonintrusive government while attempting to invade not only our
bedrooms but the examination rooms as well.
To date the Susan G.
Komen Foundation has changed their minds about funding Planned Parenthood but
not their position. has never been asked
or answered by anyone. Where are the
women who need this service or those in an influential position in both parties
to stop this onslaught? Why are they
remaining silent? This action closely
resembles the remark by Mitt Romney about not being too concerned about the
nation’s poor. The examination benefits
mostly poor women who cannot afford these life-saving procedures
otherwise. Have we now forgotten Jesus’
direction of looking out for those who cannot look out for themselves? Planned Parenthood will survive because it is
the right cause to support and Susan G. Komen will not because it has been
blinded by ever recovery. Some say that
we all should compel Komen to change their mind but I think not. You can only help a destructive person if
they want help and after watching the interview by Komen’s leader on Andre
Mitchell Reports, help is not what they are seeking. Never beg anyone to give something that they
do not wish to part with. If it’s all
about money then we have to ask ourselves why is money more important than your
soul and how much is enough? Will we
ever reach a point where people will finally allow those less fortunate to
survive or have we truly become a nation that promotes “survival of the
fittest?” Surely we all can come
together for this battle being quite apparent that we all have or had mothers,
we all have or had sisters, wives or female friends who do not need or want
government in their exam rooms. Imagine
your loved ones in dire need of the services offered by Planned Parenthood
would you not do what was necessary?
