Zimmerman gets bond and could be out of Jail in a few days
There are several great lessons that can be found in the
bond hearing that took place for George Zimmerman today. George Zimmerman is the man accused of second
degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin.
Several things happened that made me both proud and a little concerned.
What made me proud was seeing our legal system at work,
each side doing what they were supposed to do and that is defend and speak for
their clients. Zimmerman’s attorney,
Mark O’Mara showed why he is one of the best in the field. He keeps refusing to play out his case in the
media and is quite determined to keep it in the courtroom where it
belongs. His constant objections during
the bond hearing lead me to believe that he really is quite the
professional. His apologies for
defending his clients to rumors of his defense being offensive to the parents
and supporters of Trayvon leads me to believe that he is a man of high
character. His job is to get his client
off and no one should wish him ill-will for doing that. Too bad many of the truly innocent cannot
find a lawyer of Mark O’Mara’s statue.
What made me proud was hearing the prosecutors put on a
very limited case and sacrifice this battle in order to win the war. They seemed quite passionate in holding
Zimmerman accountable for the death of Trayvon Martin by consistently reminding
the judge of who Trayvon Martin was.
They made sure to continue using the words of “an unarmed teenager,
minding his own business.” This leads me
to believe that this theme will be repeated several times during the
trial. They seem quite capable of prosecuting
this case and seem to have complete confidence that they will prove their case
beyond a reasonable doubt. I was really
moved by both counsels keeping their debate civil and not infringing on the
rights of each other or the court. Even
the judge was willing to allow both parties to work things out among themselves
and he would only step in if no agreement could be reached.
What concerns me is the undercurrent of testimony given
by Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O’Mara, when he made known that Zimmerman had
be-friended Florida Law Enforcement (FLE).
What concerns me about that is George Zimmerman may have a very strong
belief that if he is placed in front of people or get a chance to converse with
them, he can easily convert them to his way of thinking. This is scary because if he believes it
strong enough, he may have been able to sabotage those who are assigned to
remain impartial.
What also concerns me is what the family will think after
this successful bond hearing. Will they
fall back into the trap of believing that all the work they did to educate a
nation and get Zimmerman arrested was in vain?
I hope not because they have accomplished much more, in the name of
their son, than they could ever imagine.
More stories are coming to light now about the mistreatment of
minorities than ever before. These
stories were often few and far between as reported on those of other
races. They have brought awareness not
only here in the United States but all over the world and that too is a good
thing.
George Zimmerman got his bond but he will never be
free. He will have to live the rest of
his life with what happened that night and it is my belief that he will be in
court again and will be found guilty if he does not choose to plea
bargain. Either way, this incident will
live on long after all of this is over because it has awaken a giant in the
public who will be looking even harder at how all of our citizens are treated
and no one could ask for a better result than that.
