A Letter from a Dying Veteran could be addressed to others

I was strongly compelled to share this letter from a dying veteran to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney because it says everything that I have been saying for so long.  The beauty of this letter written by one of my fellow military members, dying from injuries received while fighting an illegitimate war.

It was taken from an article written by djchefron titled “A dying veteran’s letter to George W Bush and Dick Cheney for Politicususa.com.  The first paragraph I would like to call your attention to is the one that says

“Your positions of authority, your millions of dollars of personal wealth, your public relations consultants, your privilege and your power cannot mask the hollowness of your character. You sent us to fight and die in Iraq after you, Mr. Cheney, dodged the draft in Vietnam, and you, Mr. Bush, went AWOL from your National Guard unit. Your cowardice and selfishness were established decades ago. You were not willing to risk yourselves for our nation but you sent hundreds of thousands of young men and women to be sacrificed in a senseless war with no more thought than it takes to put out the garbage”.

We still have those like John McCain and Lindsey Graham now pushing a war with Syria.  These same people will not be the ones on the battlefield and dodging a single bullet.  John McCain is looked upon as a war hero but unlike many who have really heard a bullet wiz by their heads, have revised their take on a declaration of wars.  Lindsey Graham is reported to have served but I cannot remember when a lawyer was ever in battle.  I could be wrong.

The writer ends his letter by saying;

“My day of reckoning is upon me. Yours will come. I hope you will be put on trial. But mostly I hope, for your sakes, that you find the moral courage to face what you have done to me and to many, many others who deserved to live. I hope that before your time on earth ends, as mine is now ending, you will find the strength of character to stand before the American public and the world, and in particular the Iraqi people, and beg for forgiveness”.

I believe this portion could be directed at so many others.  Others like those who poisoned the drinking water at so many US military bases.  Others like those who knew the water was poisoned but did not say a word to the thousands of veterans and their families living there.  So many others who do not seem to get that pushing a war for no reason without thinking about the possible loss of life to any American and their families is not a sign of a patriot, it’s a sign of a fool.
