The IRS Scandal and why We Should Be Amused
I am seriously not surprised that the GOP is all up in arms
about this IRS scandal targeting conservative groups but what has surprised me
is the uproar that liberals are waging against President Obama for this very
same reason. In their haste to appear
law-abiding and courageous, they have forgotten or have chosen to forget about
the many times this same agency as well as the CIA and FBI used to target
liberal groups during the Bush Administration.
With all of the support staffs that cable news employ, you would think
that a few of them would be allowed to research this topic more thoroughly
before jumping in front of a camera.
I so enjoyed seeing President Obama saying that he was going
to wait until more truths is revealed before taking action because if he
listened to both the GOP and liberal “talking heads” he would surely shoot
first and ask questions later. This is
the same actions that got us into a war that we did not need to wage and now
have to pay for. In one instance, some
say that we should never have a rush to judgment and two seconds later these
same mouthpieces are singing a different tune.
You see it here in this instance and if you look closely enough you will
see it in the instance of the Justice Department’s securing of a secret subpoena
to get phones records from the Associated Press (AP).
In an article by David Sirota for Salon.com titled “Stop holding Democrats to a different
standard”, it is documented the number of times these agencies were
used to target a liberal organization yet there was not as much fuss about that
then as it is now. Honestly, only a fool
would expect the GOP not to be willing to see this as a clear target on the
back of President Obama but to see the same coming from the liberal side of politics
that begs to question. Are we so afraid
of the Tea Party and extreme elements of both parties that we cannot stand up
and call it what it really is? Some have
stood up and for that this nation needs to be grateful for but more should be
willing to find their voice and find their backbone to do the same.
Will there ever be equal justice anywhere? It’s kind of doubtful especially if those
expected to display the kind of unbiased and straight-forward reporting that
people like Barbara Walters, Walter Cronkite, Paul Harvey, Tim Russert and the best
of news did long ago. We should be
amused, not for the ignorance that was displayed by the IRS for targeting any
organization unless it was strongly believed that they had committed an offense
but the illegitimate uproar and anger aimed at the administration from both
sides of the aisle. Amused that those
with influence cannot seem to find the time to do something with the housing
crisis, the homelessness, the joblessness, the lack of capital to real small
businesses, the assault on women’s rights, immigration, gun control or any of
the other economic crushing problems that we face but they seemed quite able to
chase this, yet another shiny object.
