National Security is Just another Example of America’s Juggling Act
The debate
today is the balance between keeping America safe from terrorists to honoring
the privacy of all Americans. With the
NSA now being exposed to have mined billions of data which can be considered
extremely private by some are now being looked at as being only personal by
many. The questions now are how to and
what would you call a real balance between the two.
For those
who might think this is criminal and should be stopped immediately, the first
question must be what do you have to hide?
Are you cheating on your wife or partner and wish not to be
discovered? Are you afraid that if you
say anything negative about your government, you would soon be followed by the
Men in Black or hear black helicopters? Or are you just an average person who
feels that the government should be prohibited from mining your data without
your permission? What would you say if I
told you that all the government receives are a group of phones numbers and no
conversation which may be a completely different circumstance regarding possibly
emails? For those who say that this is
no big deal, the first question is are you saying this because you voted for it
several times before until today? What
would you say if I told you that not looking closely at the rules and laws you
establish does not consider all options will be your political downfall.
Bottom line
there is another thing that must be considered by all sides. Look back in our history when a major event
happened. Events like the recent
hurricanes, tornados, bombings and terrorist activities. When these things happen, the number one
question asked is who knew what when and why did they not do anything to stop
it. We begin to look for those people we
can blame instead of looking to ourselves first. Remember 9/11, some wanted to blame the
flyers of the plane, the trainers of the pilots and George Bush and his
administration. The Underwear Bomber and
Boston Bombing were looked at by a few as the fault of the Obama
Administration. We look for people to
blame instead of looking at ourselves.
We cannot
have our cake and eat it too. We want
security but we do not want to pay the cost.
Yes, I am highly concerned that my information is being mined by a
complete stranger but does not that happen right now. I go to a particular website and immediately
I am besieged by ads pertaining to or about that ad. I complete an application asking one
particular school about educational benefits and immediately every college
recruiter calls. I, personally thank the
officials who are now releasing these warrants so that we can at least get a
glimpse but I do not harbor any ill-will as long as the data being mined saves just
one of my fellow Americans lives. Not to
mention, the media found finding Boston bombers Facebook page news-worthy, why
shouldn’t the NSA?
